Things for Seniors to do in the Winter

It’s that time of year again when the roads and sidewalks are covered in snow and ice. Going outside is risking having the bitter cold seep deep into our bones. If you have arthritis in your joints, like many seniors, you will want to find some cozy indoor activities to keep you busy during the winter months. If you have the space to do so, the best thing you can do is walk. At MLP, we block off our outdoor trail in the winter due to ice and snow for everyone’s safety; however, we have long hallways that many of our residents utilize as a place to keep up with their walking. Many of our residents like to walk three times a day or more and usually make little social stops along the way.

Here’s a small list of activities you could do indoors to help keep you busy:

  • Puzzles – Puzzles are a great way to keep the mind sharp.
  • Movies – Movies can provide great entertainment.
  • Board Games – Great for keeping the mind sharp and bringing laughter as you challenge your friends.
  • Painting – great for practising hand-eye coordination and so enjoyable for the soul.
  • Reading – Getting lost in a good book can help pass the time, and they come in so many forms from large print to audio tapes.
