Why It’s Important for Seniors to Stay Hydrated

As temperatures begin to rise, staying properly hydrated becomes essential, especially for seniors. Aging adults are a lot more susceptible to dehydration because of a natural decline in thirst sensation and changes in kidney function that affect fluid balance. Many common medications can also increase fluid loss, making it even more important to stay ahead of hydration.

Water is vital for regulating body temperature, keeping joints flexible, and supporting digestion and brain function. During the warmer months, the risk of heat-related sickness, for example, heat exhaustion or heat stroke, increases, particularly for seniors who may not cool down as efficiently as younger individuals. Even mild dehydration can lead yourself or a loved one to fatigue, confusion, dizziness, or urinary tract infections—conditions that can seriously impact health and well-being.
