Tips for Celebrating Christmas with Seniors in Assisted Living

This holiday season, help the seniors in your life thrive in their assisted living homes. While they may not be able to participate in all the traditional festivities, there are many ways to make Christmas feel special for them. Here are a few tips to create meaningful memories for the seniors in your life during the holiday season.

Personalize the Experience

Seniors often appreciate when Christmas is tailored to their preferences. Use decorations that hold sentimental value—perhaps old ornaments or family photos. At MLP Residence, we handcraft Christmas ornaments every year to bring community into our Christmas at MLP.

Bring the Sounds of the Season

Music has a way of evoking powerful emotions. At MLP Residence, we have many Sing Alongs throughout the season with our residents' favourite classic Christmas carols. This year, we have a local childrens dance school coming in to perform the Nutcracker to help brighten the season for our residents.

Host a Family Visit

While it may not be feasible for everyone to travel, try to organize a family visit to the facility. Just spending time with loved ones and sharing stories helps bring joy and nostalgia to seniors. Enjoying festive activities together can be incredibly uplifting, so come visit us and join in on the fun.

Engage in Simple Activities

Seniors may not be able to engage in physically demanding activities, but simple crafts like making holiday cards or decorating a small tree can be a fun way to participate. At MLP Residence, we screen the family classic Christmas movies, and every year, we come together as a community to decorate each Christmas tree in the building!

Respect Their Routine

While it’s great to introduce festive activities, it’s also important to respect your loved one’s routine. Keep in mind any health needs, and ensure the activities are low-stress and manageable. Balancing fun with comfort will make for a joyful and memorable Christmas experience.

By personalizing the holiday and staying mindful of their needs, you can create a Christmas experience that seniors in assisted living will treasure.
