6 Ways to Keep Your Senior Parents Engaged and Social

Keeping our senior parents engaged and social is vital for their mental and emotional well-being. Check out these different ways that families can help foster a sense of connection and activity in their older loved ones.

Enjoy Regular Family Visits with them. Spending time with our senior parents is essential. Plan regular visits, even if short, to ensure they feel valued and connected. This also gives them something to look forward to throughout their week.

Encourage them to find a new hobby. Help your parents rediscover an old hobby or explore some new ones. Whether it’s gardening, knitting, or reading, engaging in activities they enjoy boosts their self-esteem and keeps their mind sharp.

Have them join a social group. Many communities, like MLP Residence, offer senior-friendly social clubs, exercise classes, and events. These groups provide a great opportunity for seniors to meet others with similar interests, reducing those feelings of isolation.

Use technology for connection. Using video calls, social media, or messaging apps is a great way to help our loved ones stay in touch with family and friends. Many seniors enjoy staying connected online, especially with the younger grandkids.

Enjoy the great outdoors. Taking our senior loved ones outside for a scenic walk around when we visit, or going to the nearest park for some fresh air and a change of scenery can really lift their spirits.

Join in on Game Nights. Encourage them to engage in fun, mentally stimulating games like card games, puzzles, or trivia. This keeps both the mind and that social connection active.
