As spring sets in with warmer weather, our seniors may find themselves particularly vulnerable to seasonal allergies. Pollen in the air can trigger various symptoms, like sneezing, congestion, and red, itchy eyes, making it troublesome to get out and enjoy that lovely weather after a long, cold winter. Did you know you can monitor local pollen counts to avoid outdoor exposure on high pollen days? Many weather apps or websites, like the weather network, offer a pollen forecast to help everyone with those pesky seasonal allergies. It allows people to know if they should stay inside or helps them be prepared for the day if they have plans.
Check out these easy tips to help keep allergens to a minimum in your home:
- Keep windows closed, especially during peak pollen times, and use the air conditioning to help filter allergens from the air. A high-efficiency particulate air HEPA) filter in air purifiers can also reduce airborne pollen. At MLP Residence, we have HEPA purifiers placed strategically in all areas of the building to help our residents breathe fresh, clean air all the time.
- Pollen can settle on surfaces inside the home. So, make sure to clean floors, furniture, and surfaces frequently in the spring, using a damp cloth to avoid spreading allergens in the air. Vacuuming with a HEPA filter can also help reduce pollen buildup.
- Staying hydrated can also help to reduce allergy symptoms, as dry air can worsen any already existing irritation. Over-the-counter antihistamines, nasal sprays, and decongestants are commonly used to help ease these symptoms, but seniors should always talk to their doctor or their pharmacist before starting any new OTC medications to avoid potential interactions with other medications they may be taking.
- Anyone who suffers from severe or persistent allergy symptoms may want to speak with their doctor about possibly taking an allergy shot (immunotherapy) or trying other doctor-recommended treatments that could provide long-term relief. Always ask questions about side effects, as all types of medications affect everyone differently!
By following these simple tips, seniors can help themselves by lessening the impact of seasonal allergies on their system and get back to enjoying the beauty of spring without the awful discomfort.
